- The Staten Island Yankees have extended their winning streak to 7
consecutive games with a 4-2 win over the Brooklyn Cyclones. With the
win the Baby Bombers pull to within 1.5 games of the division lead.
Staten Island was the
first to put a run on the board when they scored in the first inning.
Justin Snyder led the game off with a ground ball single to center and
with 2-outs stole second. Braedyn Pruitt then singled to right, brining
Snyder in and giving the Yankees a 1-0 lead. Jose Gil then doubled and
Pruitt rounded third but a good relay from the first baseman nailed
Pruitt at the plate.
One more would come
around for the Baby bombers in the third inning. Damon Sublett led it
off with a single on a ground ball to center and with 1-out and Jose Gil
at the plate he stole second. Gil then walked to bring up Austin Krum.
Krum who has been hot as of late belted a double to right, scoring
Sublett.
The Cyclones plated
single runs in the fourth and fifth inning to tie the game at 2, but the
Yankees were not going to go down to their cross-town rivals. With
1-out in the sixth DJ Hollingsworth legged out his first triple of the
season on a fly ball to center field. Justin Snyder was intentionally
walked and on the final throw the ball got away and allowed
Hollingsworth to score.
Staten Island would pad
the lead with an insurance run in the seventh. Braedyn Pruitt singled
to right and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Austin Krum would
line a single to center, bringing Pruitt home and give the Yankees a 4-2
lead.
Ryan Pope started the
game for the Staten Island Yankees, earning his third professional win.
The former third round draft pick went 5.2 innings allowing 2 runs on 6
hits and striking out 7 batters. Ryan Zink came in to finish the sixth
and pitch the seventh before handing it over to Jacinto Gonell. Both
Zink and Gonell held the ‘Clones hitless in 2.1 innings of work. To
finish it off the Yankees went to their closer “The Sandman” Jonathan
Ortiz. Ortiz allowed just 1 hit and struck out the first 2 batters
before a pop out to end the game and earn his 13th save.
Austin Krum has been hot
as of late, having 3 hits in his last 4 games. The Cyclones and Yankees
meet again tomorrow night for a day/night doubleheader in Staten
Island. The first game is at 2:00 and Jason Stephens will start with
the second game at 7:00 and Craig Heyer will get the nod.
